Discovery Gateway -- Junior Achievement City

Ever wondered what it takes to be an entrepreneur?

The professional and personal challenges, the high and lows, the failures and the success?

Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 1800 past events in 120 countries around the world in 2014.

The non-profit organization is headquartered in Seattle, Washington but Startup Weekend organizers and facilitators can be found in over 200 cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies.

All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.

Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups. If you want to put yourself in the shoes of an entrepreneur, register now for the best weekend of your life!

Sunny Washington

President, Ardusat

Sunny began her career as bank manager for US Bank. She then moved to Certiport where she launched their digital literacy program in over 80 countries. In 2009 she was introduced to the co-founders at Instructure. After seeing a demo of their LMS, she was convinced that this would be a game-changer in the market. In January 2010, she joined Instructure as employee 7. During her time at Instructure she assisted in building the sales, business development, account management, and marketing teams.

In April 2014, Sunny was hired by Spire, a space satellite company out of San Francisco, to build Ardusat, an ed tech company focused on delivering STEM resources to spark student innovation. They just launched their program where students will be able to run experiments on the satellites that Spire builds and launches into space.

Stan Bassett

CEO, Alliance Health Networks

Stan thrives on the challenge and pressure of growing businesses. Whether hitting financial targets, helping colleagues see their potential, raising venture capital, sales and business development from the C suite and on down, setting and executing strategy...he is calm under fire and have consistently delivered results.

Most recently he was the CEO of Alliance Health. Alliance Health is the online leader in patient to patient engagement around chronic conditions. With a tremendous effort the Alliance team came together and had a terrific 2013. Earlier this year the team wrapped up a successful sale of the company and Alliance is poised to be a top tier player in the space.

Prior to that, Stan was the President of TechMediaNetwork (now Purch). Working with a great team, they grew TechMediaNetwork into the largest online publisher of technology and science content. With over 30 million monthly visitors, TechMedia is second only to CNET (CBS Interactive) in reach. Partnering with Village Ventures, Highway 12 and ABS Capital, we raised $40 million and have positioned the company for ongoing growth on a global basis.

Stan is now looking forward to his next gig.
